Hi, my name is Dannie, and I am an Occupational Health Technician at Peritus Health Management, based in the Northwest of England. I am a GMC registered clinician with a background in Biomedical Science (BSc) and Physician Associate Studies (MSc). When I first heard about the Occupational Health Technician role and health surveillance, I thought this would fit in perfectly with my previous experience, especially health promotion in the workplace.
A Journey to Health Surveillance
Since joining in October 2024, I’ve completed a comprehensive 12-week training program to ensure competency in conducting health surveillance, including spirometry, audiometry, skins,
and HAVS. These services play a crucial role in monitoring the health of employees, especially in high-risk environments like construction and manufacturing. This training, combined with practical experience, ensures I can offer clients reliable and accurate health data, reducing workplace risks and improving employee wellbeing.
Serving the Northwest Region with Mobile Health Surveillance
I currently travel across the Northwest region in a mobile medical unit (MMU) to carry out health surveillance testing at client sites. I enjoy working across this region, having developed strong local knowledge through my education and previous roles. I grew up near Wrexham, studied in Chester, and completed my clinical medical placements in Birkenhead and Wallasey, gaining valuable experience in healthcare settings. I’ve also worked near Manchester and Liverpool, including roles in phlebotomy and Covid-19 PCR testing. The combination of my previous experience has resulted in me having a deep understanding of the region and the occupational health needs of businesses operating here.
Collaboration and Continuous Improvement
Building strong working relationships with my fellow technicians has been a key part of my role at Peritus Health Management. Every month, we hold clinical supervision meetings to review updates to procedures and ensure we maintain the highest standards in health surveillance. These meetings also provide an opportunity to collaborate with finance and administration teams, helping to streamline our services and ensure a seamless experience for our clients.
Expanding My Expertise for the Future
In the future, I aim to expand my expertise by gaining certification in enhanced HAVS3 testing and drug and alcohol testing, as well as obtaining my ARTP qualification in spirometry. These advancements will allow me to provide a broader range of occupational health services, further supporting workplace safety and employee wellbeing in the Northwest.
